About the center

The Institute of Biology and Medical Genetics (IBMG) is one of the oldest institutes of its kind in the world, with a history spanning over one hundred years. It provides instruction in both undergraduate and postgraduate study programs at the First Faculty of Medicine and several other faculties. As a joint unit of the General University Hospital in Prague and the First Faculty of Medicine, the Institute of Biology and Medical Genetics provides comprehensive genetic diagnostics and patient care. IBMG also participates in postgraduate education for medical and healthcare professionals in the field of Medical Genetics. Several unique research programs are conducted in the Centre of Cell Biology and the Experimental Genetics Department of IBMG.

Lenka Šlachtová received a Primus grant and runs her own research group at the First Faculty of Medicine of Charles University, which specialises in the study of neurodegenerative diseases, especially amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) – a disease in which your muscles gradually weaken when you are fully conscious and we don’t know how to treat it yet. In addition to research, years ago she founded ALSA, a non-profit that brings together patients and professionals working on ALS.
