John Garrett- , Ireland
In celebration of my wife’s life, I would like to use my Camino De Santiago journey to raise funds for Project MinE, a research initiative investigating the genetic causes of Motor Neuron Disease (MND), also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
On October 8th 2014, my wife of 45 years, Eleanor, lost her courageous battle with MND. In 2009, prior to her diagnosis, we walked the Portugese Camino de Santiago from Porto to Santiago de Compostela. It was our plan to walk a second Camino, but that was not to be.
In her memory and celebration of her life, I will walk another Camino, hiking 865 km starting August 23rd thru October 4th across the North of Spain. I will carry with me Eleanor’s Scallop shell from our first Camino, the symbol of the pilgrim.
Project MinE aims to sequence the genomes (full DNA profile) of 15,000 people with MND and 7,500 control subjects. By comparing the DNA of patients and controls this research will open up new opportunities to discover genetic causes of MND. Project MinE has already made a breakthrough in identifying genes related to MND; an important first step in developing new and effective treatments, but more steps are needed.
For those of you who knew Eleanor, she never sat still when there was a walk or hike to be done or a mountain to climb. She would always tell the girls:
“Just one more Hill”. Project MinE is just “one more hill” on the road to discovering a cause and cure for MND.
