Project MinE is the largest genetic study of ALS ever done. By sequencing DNA profiles we will find the genetic causes of ALS/ MND. With 2 petabytes of data this is a unique challenge in terms of the required storage and computing capacity.
The data from a single DNA profile requires around 80 gigabytes of storage. All 22,500 DNA profiles require some 2 petabytes. This is equivalent to a pile of hard drives of more than 100 meters! Quite a challenging amount of data to store and to perform analyses on. The Foundation ALS Netherlands funded ‘Beyond Project MinE’ to help us to solve this challenge. Accenture, a leading consultancy office involved thanks to ALS patient Garmt van Soest, provided us with valuable advice. Problem solved, thanks to our partners!
